Day of the Dead (1985)

George Romero’s “Living Dead” trilogy is completed with this apocalyptic film where the dead now rule our cities and mankind is just about ready to be wiped out completely. A group of government scientists trying to study what makes the zombies tick are shacked up in an underground bunker with a bunch of asshole army dudes. The army wants the zombies dead, the scientists want to psychoanalyze them, and the walking dead above ground just want to munch on some intestines… be it scientist, army, whomever. Many fans were not to happy with this one, I think most were expecting a film just like “Dawn”, which was pretty much a zombie-action type flick. Lots of zombies all the time, plenty of guns firing, etc. “Day” is more of a study as to how the human mind reacts to all of this crazy shit going on around it, and how all the characters relate to one another in light of everything. I really enjoyed that aspect of the film. I mean, think how bad it would suck if you were the one stuck underground while a bunch of hungry zombies marched above you! The acting was great from all involved and really helped you to sympathize with the characters and what they are going through, which is essentially a Zombie Apocalypse. That’s not to say there are no zombies, there is a shitload of them, though not until really about the last thirty minutes of the film. Tom Savini’s f/x were terrific, most of the zombies look as if they have been dead for a while, and not like the “blue/green” faces Romero used in “Dawn”. Plenty of organ munching, eyeball popping, intestine-yanking behavior runs rampant with these undead folks. Watch for the scene where the zombie being operated on tries to get up and all of his innards come sliding out. That was pretty damn cool. A nice finish to a fine, fine trilogy…now let’s get one more “Dead” flick out of Romero before he gets to damn old…agreed?
