Bride of Re-Animator (1990)

Director: Brian Yuzna

The further exploits of doctors West and Cain are featured in this sequel that, while not as much fun as the first, is worth a rental for fans of the first film. The main focus for our good doctors in this one is to create an entirely new life in the “Frankenstein” tradition, by stitching together various body parts topped off with Barbara Crampton’s heart from the first film. Along the way a snoopy detective figures out what the boys are up to, and the evil Dr. Hill from the first film makes a return appearance, this time with bat wings stitched on his head! While I loved the first “Re-Animator”, I was a bit disappointed by this one. Not as much sick humor from the first film survived into this one, and the idea of the snoopy detective catching on to the “re-animating” going on seemed a tad lame. Plus, the idea of West and Cain getting hired at the same hospital where they caused the “miskatonic massacre” seemed a bit far-fetched to me. On the f/x side of things, everything was nice and bloody, loaded with many of West’s “failed” experiments, including arms and feet stitched together and 5 fingers with an eyeball attached to the top. Pretty cool. The end scene of West’s experiments all coming after him was pretty good and bloody as well. Brian Yuzna did an ok job with this one, but let’s get Stuart Gordon back for the third one so we get a true “Re-Animator” sequel.
