House On Haunted Hill (1959)

Director: William Castle

Very cool flick which is probably "the" ideal haunted house movie in my opinion. Vincent Price plays a wealthy businessman who invites 7 different people, all from various walks of life, to stay the night in a haunted house. To those that are brave enough to stay the entire evening, they will be rewarded for their bravado with $10,000 in cash. Alas, it does not take things long to go bump in the night, as our poor guests eventually find out. While some of the material may seem a little tame or corny by today's standards, I found this one to hold up pretty well after all these years.... a little over forty to be exact! Vincent Price is terrific as usual, the man just has a presence about him that definetly shows on the screen. He is most definetly missed by genre fans around the world, to that there is no doubt. Interesting bit of trivia for you all, when this one originally played in theaters, the place was rigged with a skeleton on wires to come swooping down on the audience to coincide with a certain scene in the picture. How cool is that! You will never get some cool gag like that to happen in theaters nowadays. Must viewing for any true fan of horror, just remember to keep in mind when it was made, and take it all in perspective.
