Horror Hotel (1960)
Fairly entertaining film which has achieved “cult” status among many fans throughout the years. Story opens in the late 1600’s when lynching and burning witches was all the rage and the most entertaining thing to do on a Saturday night. The local townsfolk of Whitewood are in the midst of burning a young lady accused of witchcraft when one of her fellow members in the Satan Fan Club pleads to Lucifer to save her, and this he does, sort of, by granting her resurrection and takeover of the small town many years later. Flash forward to the present day in which a young college coed visiting the town to do some research for a paper on witchcraft stumbles across the coven and vanishes into thin air. Now it’s now up to her scientist brother (you know, the types that only believes in what they can see and touch) to rescue her. Stars a very young and dapper Christopher Lee as a professor on witchcraft and perhaps a little more as well. Loaded with tons of atmosphere and what has to be the worlds record for most fog effects in a movie. Fairly creepy in a subtle, yet effective way. “Horror Hotel” does contain some plot holes though, for example why does the town’s preacher allow his daughter to stay in the town even though he knows the place is infested with witches? No matter, just kick back and soak up the atmosphere and overall weirdness this one posseses.
