Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows (2000)

Director: Joe Berlinger

Going a whole new route opposite the first film, the second “Blair Witch” abandons the “shaky-cam documentary” vibe of the first and even goes so far to admit that the first film’s events, shock of all shocks…never really happened. Since the first flick left a ton of unanswered questions I was really hoping the sequel would have followed the traditional route in terms of picking up where the first flick ended. Let’s keep pretending it’s all real, (c’mon, if you didn’t know the first one was fake you’re a jackass) send more kids into the woods, let the witch fuck with em’ (just give us a glimpse of her this time!) and perhaps even answer some of those questions we all want to know. What happened exactly to Josh, Mike, and Heather? Was it really the “Blair Witch” or some nutcase instead that got em? I guess we’ll never know, for this sequel actually admits that the first film really was “just a movie” and picks up in Burketsville where Blair Witch fever is running rampant.

Capitalizing on the notoriety of the film, many folks there are selling rocks and stick figures to tourists who want to know more about the film, and one can even go so far as to take a “tour” of the residing woods, Coffin Rock, etc. It’s with one of these tours that a group of youngsters stay the night in the woods, only to awaken the next morning unable to account for several hours of the passed evening. Soon everyone is having weird flashbacks of the previous night and weird ass pagan symbols are mysteriously popping up on their bodies. Everyone starts losing a grip on reality, people start dying, and soon the actors and you, the viewer, are left wondering exactly what the fuck is going on. I will give the director of this flick credit, though it feels like your typical Hollywood type film the whole vibe is somewhat of an extremely trippy “is what I’m seeing really happening” deal, which leaves the viewer constantly guessing at the potential outcome of the film. This does however become a tad confusing at times, and the payoff just is not really worth the wait. The acting is competent enough, though the dialogue is nothing to write home about in certain scenes. There is just way too much yelling between the characters at times, which gets very annoying. Nothing is really creepy at all in the flick except for maybe the drowned little girl shown briefly at the beginning, I gotta admit she was a tad spooky. “Blair Witch 2” is nothing all that great or scary, though if you wanna see a cute Wicca chick get naked and dance around, then give this a view.
