The Incredible Melting Man (1977)

Director: William Sachs

Ahh, what memories I have of this one. "The Incredible Melting Man" frequently graced my t.v. screen on many a Saturday afternoon, courtesy of "Thriller Double Feature" out of the Detroit area. While it is not a particularly great film, however due to nostalgic reasons, I hold this flick in high regard. Essentially it plays like one of those old 50s sci-fi "monster on the loose" flicks. A crew of astronauts makes a trip to Saturn, in which only one comes home alive. Once he is back home on earth, his body literally starts to melt away, due to an unknown space virus. Inside the military hospital, he sneaks a look at his face when the nurse is not looking, thus becoming outraged at what he has become. I also guess that when your body starts to melt you become overwhelmed with the urge to kill lots of people, because thats what our melting man (MM for short) sets out to do. The rest of the movie deals with MM roaming the countryside, attacking various people, while he is all the while being tracked down by his military doctor buddy. I loved the scenes of MM walking the countryside, body oozing away, while visions of past space travels danced in his head. Being eight when I first saw this, and having a big woods behind my house, I was always certain I was going to stumble across a melting man or two if I did not make it back home before it got dark out! Rick Bakers melting man f/x is terrific and looks great nearly 25 years after it was made. For a good, solid, sci-fi monster flick, you can't go wrong with this one. It's plenty dumb, but terrific fun nonetheless.
