Invisible Man
The Invisible Man (1933)
Good fun as scientist injects himself with a bizarre solution rendering his body completely invisible while turning him mad as a hatter to boot. Our invisible man runs around strangling people, derailing trains and plotting world domination while proclaiming that an army of invisible supermen will be “free to rape and pillage while making the world cower at their feet”. Amen brother. Meanwhile the police are strategizing (rather ineffectively) how to catch him and the obligatory love interest swoons in the background. The special effects are the standout here and, come to think of it, this might be the “first” special effects laden film where the onscreen trickery is the main event. Standout scenes include the first appearance of The Invisible One as he enters a salon all wrapped in bandages and wearing goggles, as well as his initial “unwrapping” to reveal, well, absolutely nothing. Good fun in the classic Universal tradition, and a great watch for a younger horror fan.
