The Borrower (1989)

Director: John McNaughton

For the video box of this one, they should have put a sticker on it saying you are getting two films for the price of one. Let me explain. The main idea of this one is that of an alien who has been exiled from his planet due to the various atrocities he commited. He is exiled to earth, described as the worst place in the galaxy or something along those lines, by the alien judge. He is also disguised as a human (the aliens look like big cockroaches or something), so as not to scare the populace I guess. Anyway, his human host body only lasts so long for some reason before he starts to pop out of it, usually with his head exploding. The answer to that problem is to yank off a human head, stick it on the body where the old head was, and continue on his way. Of course, the alien also develops the personality of whomevers head he tries on, which allows for some pretty funny one-liners. Now to the second story, with everyones favorite gargoyle Rae Dawn Chong on the heels of a rapist killer type. Along the way her and her partner are assigned to the mysterious beheadings, but seem more intent (in Dawn Chongs case) on nabbing the murderer. Things start to get a bit muddled towards the end (kinda like this review), but things do slightly tie in together pretty nicely at the finish. The alien effects were pretty good, and I must admit I found myself laughing at a lot of parts. All in all, things were just to schizophrenic feeling for me to really enjoy this one. Another 90 minutes of my life wasted.
