Body Parts (1991)
Above average flick that tells the story of a shrink who loses his arm in a really unpleasant auto accident and wakes up in the hospital to discover a brand spanking new appendage in his old arm’s place. Catch is folks, this ain’t no ordinary arm, this here’s one of those “psycho” models, as it seems the previous owner was a mass murder who killed over twenty people. Holy shit! Soon the good doc, played by Norman Bates “assistant manager” himself, Jeff Fahey, is having some nasty mood swings between bouts of slapping the wife and kids around while pondering the age old question “does true evil reside in the flesh or the soul?” Soon other recipients from the same “donor” start dropping like flies as someone seemingly has come collecting for his old body parts, and our good doctor is seemingly next on the list. This one is loaded with tons of excellent effects, be it ripped off arms, legs, or bloody torsos, all the way to the obligatory car chases and the like. Watch out for the “handcuff” car chase, and the opening car crash scene, both will really make you squirm…guaranteed. Acting is solid all around, particularly by Fahey, who in my opinion is an extremely underrated actor. Look out as well for the voice of Chucky himself, Brad Dourif, as an artist who paints some rather disturbing images with his new “psycho” model arm. Sort of a blend of psychological/psycho killer/mad-scientist flicks, “Body Parts” is a great way to kill ninety minutes of your life, and recommended for a rental. Good stuff.
