Maniac Cop 3: Badge of Silence (1991)

Director: William Lustig/Joel Soisson

Well, Officer Cordell is back on the beat (surprise, surprise) after a voodoo priest resurrects him from the grave. Why he's resurrected I have no clue, oh wait...the Maniac Cop wants a bride! Makes sense huh? Actually it doesn't, and the lack of explanation for Cordell's resurrection is just one of many problems this one has.

Apparently Cordell has the hots for a policewoman who was affectionately known as "Maniac Kate" by her fellow coppers for her Dirty Harry type antics and what not. Of course, with a name like that you know Cordell is going to develop an instant hard on for her...problem is Kate's on life support after a nasty incident in which she shot a junkie and his hostage during a hold up in a pharmacy. However, just like Cordell was framed (sorta), Kate is being framed by the surviving junkie as the video footage that was shot shows her to cold-heartedly shoot the junkie and said hostage.

The entire movie consists of Cordell killing various persons wanting to take Kate off life support and features chain-smoking actor Robert Davi returning from part 2 as the cop on Cordell's trail. Davi has to stop Cordell before he presents Kate to the voodoo priest for a rather unholy wedding ceremony, or something along those lines. The big problem here is that we're given no motivation for Cordell's return. I mean, if the voodoo guy resurrected Cordell just so he could tie the knot well, that's pretty weak. The entire film feels like a million other slasher flicks what with Cordell generically offing anyone who threatens his wedding plans to Kate. Don't expect the full out action set pieces of part two cus it simply ain't here. There is a decent little car chase at the end featuring a flaming Cordell in one car, and Davi and a leggy blonde in the other, but that's it as far as highlights go. A real let down after the first two flicks, and William Lustig reportedly quit his directing duties half way through the film over the terrible script. I don't blame the guy one bit.
