Bruiser (2001)

Director: George Romero

Poor Henry is pretty much shit on by everyone he knows. His friend, and also his accountant, is stealing his money, his wife is screwing his asshole boss, etc. In other words, Henry is the perennial whipping boy. Others give it and he takes it, day in and day out. However, one morning he wakes up to see not his normal face staring back at him in the mirror, but a white, blank, and emotionless mask. Since he never had the balls to stand up to anyone, Henry is now devoid of an identity and self. However, there is one way to get it back, and of course, that way is to brutally murder all the cocksuckers that have screwed him over. Go get em' Henry! "Bruiser", George Romero's first film in about 7 years has it's up's and down's. The overall concept is a terrific idea, essentially a man losing his sense of identity and what he will do to get it back. It just seemed to me the idea could have been developed a little more as the film unfolded. The concept is a deep one, but Romero must have chose to not get all psychological on us for some reason. As far as characters go, you really cheer Henry on as he exacts his bloody revenge. Romero made every character besides Henry pretty much unlikable in any way, and you really want to see Henry off em all, I know I did. The film tends to get a bit muddled, particularly at the end in the big party scene. I never was really sure what the hell was happening there. Overall, Bruiser is a good film and is definetly better than most of the new stuff that is out today. It's a shame this one never made it into theatres.
