The Pack (1977)
Pretty lame thriller about a pack of mangy mutts, now starved and rabid, running rampant on an island and terrorizing a group of stranded tourists. Seems just about every tourist on the island decided to get a dog for the summer only to leave the poor pooches behind to fend for themselves when vacation time was up. The opening scene, in which a young Clint Howard is forced to watch his dad tie up his pooch to a tree, only to be reassured that someone will eventually come and get him...I mean, what a way to teach being humane to animals! Neglected by their human masters, these pissed off pooches join forces and start attacking the said humans who betrayed them, to varying degrees of effectiveness. While most scenes were pretty boring, I did enjoy the bit where the one chick is stuck in a VW Bug while about 20 rabid mutts try to get to the soft, chewy, center inside the car. I think that one predates Cujo by a few years, no? The acting was sorta off, and most of the characters you just really did not give a shit about one way or the other. That one fat guy in particular really annoyed the hell out of me. Why the hell did he never put a move on that older/mature chick that he kept getting stuck with? I mean, c'mon! Fortunately, he dies in what has to be one of the most laughable slow motion scenes (besides the piss awful Alien Prey) ever committed to film. The fat jiggles my friends, the fat jiggles. I bet the dogs were disappointed when the guy chose to throw himself off a cliff, his carcass could have kept them fed for weeks. After various boring dog attacks and the like, we end with the old NOTLD treatment, with everyone stuck in a building while the mutts try to get inside, with predictable results. For anyone who was worried that human/dog relationships may be ruined for all time, fear not friends. The end shot assures the viewer that canine/human relationships will overcome all obstacles and we can both live in this world side by side in peace.
