The Nest (1987)

Director: Terence Winkless

Peaceful little island community falls under attack to murderous, flesh eating cockroaches that have the power to imitate whatever it is they consume. You see, the mayor of the island has struck a deal with one of those big companies that always turns out to be up to no good, in this case the company is named "INTEC". In return for INTEC money to develop the island for real estate sales, the mayor agrees to let them do some very experimental pesticide research on the nearby cockroach population. Of course, the experiment all goes to shit, and the roaches become super roaches and immune to all pesticides, begin breeding, develop a taste for human flesh, and start on their course for world domination. I'm sure their thinking was first the island, then the world, or something like that. Has some nice acting for a grade-B flick, and everything moves along at a nice pace. Look for the scene where that evil scientist chick who created the roaches gets a bit excited when her little darlings start nibbling on her hand. That was somewhat interesting. When the roaches attack they make a pretty big mess of things, and once they start to mutate we get a roach/cat creature, a mayor/roach and a queen roach that consists of several bodies smushed together as one. Sort of reminded me of John Carpenter's The Thing in that regard. Could have benefited from one or two (or 20) naked chicks here and there, but I guess you can't have your killer roaches and boobs as well. Boobs or no boobs, The Nest was good fun all the way around.
