Jaws 3 (1983)

Ah, the infamous "Jaws Goes To Sea World" installment...shot in none other than gorgeous 3-D shark vision! Though part two was pretty dumb, it still was somewhat fun, an ingredient this sequel obviously forgot to include. The film now focuses on the two Brody boys instead of their shark-terminating father. I think maybe Roy Scheider had better stuff to do? Anyway, the elder Brody boy (Mike?) is now a big shot at Sea World, which obviously had to be the Florida one, cus' I don't really see any Great Whites up here by Lake Erie where the only other (at least back in 83) Sea World resided at the time. The younger Brody shows up as well, on vacation from college or something and wastes no time in picking up cutie Lea Thompson in a nearby bar. Nice legs Lea! Soon enough, people start turning up looking like they just went through a meat grinder, and the Sea World team discovers they have a great white on their hands. They actually capture the shark (a mere ten footer), and try to put it on display in the park where it quickly dies in captivity. However, lo and behold, another body turns up this time with a much bigger bite radius on it, eliminating the previous shark from being the culprit. Who could the offender be you ask? Why, it's none other than momma shark, all 35 feet of her out to avenge her babies death.
Now first off, mother sharks don't give a shit what happens to their offspring once they spit the suckers out. The babies swim away; maybe mom eats one or two, whatever. Great whites are not nurturing animals, and I would be interested in seeing how many people actually bought this crap. Besides that lame plot concept, this film suffers tremendously in the pacing department. We get a lot of Sea World scenery, lots of needless character development and some attempts at romance that all fall flatter than my skinny ass. The acting is nothing to terrible, it's just that you could care less about who gets ate and who lives. The 3-D stuff may have looked ok on the big screen, but since I never saw it in the theaters I can't really say for sure. All I know is that it looks like crap on video, especially the end scene of shark chompers flying towards the screen...jeez was that bad. The shark itself is as phony looking as ever and just looks plain bad in all the 3-D scenes. In one part it just sort of glides across the screen, no fin or tail movement at all, simply terrible. The only scene I found remotely interesting was when the shark chased those water skiers in the park, making that one four minute scene in a 90 minute movie that I was awake for. On an interesting side note, when I was five I went to the Sea World in Ohio, and they had Bruce the shark out of the water for all to see. You could see his robotic insides and all that stuff...pretty cool. I was still scared of the damn thing to. As for Jaws 3, I will say that it is better than part four, but of course that's not really saying a whole hell of a lot.
