Deep Blue Sea (1999)
Scientist types looking for a cure to Alzheimer's disease turn to researching sharks (sharks never get sick or senile) to find a cure. Along the way (and I'm not sure how) they were able to create a hybrid shark with an intelligence almost up to human standards. Next thing you know, all hell's breaking loose at the offshore research center as a storm hits and the sharks are soon loose, pissed, and very hungry. Our fishy friends want nothing more than to eat those that created them and escape the research centers confines (it's circled with a fence), so they can get to the open ocean. To begin, I just want to say that this movie would have been a little better if they would have had some interesting characters in it. I really could not give a shit about who got ate or who lived. Actually, I rooted for the damn sharks in this one so there. L.L. Cool J plays a cook who says stuff like a "brother don't belong here with crazy white folk", and other token black character lines. Can we not get a decently written part for a black actor? Sheesh. The shark effects ranged from good to absolutely horrible. The scenes where they used the mechanical sharks were best, but the CGI effects? Christ, it looked like bad 3-D or something. The shark attacks were pretty bloody and messy I will say that, but that CGI stuff is just horrible. Watch the scene where the shark spits the one guy at the big glass window to break it. Absolutely horrible. Oh, and by the way, so is Deep Blue Sea....piss on it.
