Scream,Blacula,Scream (1973)
William Marshall returns as the one and only Blacula, seeking out voodoo priestess Pam Grier to help rid him of his vampire curse. Features more of the same from the first “Blacula” with perhaps a slighter emphasis on some comedic overtones. Marshall is simply kickass as Blacula, as I said before the guy’s just got an overall imposing presence thanks to his height and booming voice, and in my eye he’s right up there with Christopher Lee as far as playing one of the best onscreen Dracula types. “SBS” features several decent scares, particularly when Blacula comes charging after his prey with those funky sideburns to show he’s in full “bloodsucker” mode. The other scares come from all of the bad seventies fashions and music of the time, but hey…I guess you had to be there. What I appreciated from both films of this series was that even though the whole “blaxploitation” element is blatantly obvious, the two films never fuck with, or dumb down I should say, the essence of Blacula’s character or the horrific aspects of the vampire legend itself. Today we would get Damon Wayans as Blacula or maybe even Snoop Dog…need I say more? If you liked “Blacula”, you’ll like this one…dig?
