Dog Soldiers (2002)

Director: Neil Marshall

Very nice film that combines a little bit of "Night of the Living Dead" and "Aliens", with touches of both "The Howling" and "American Werewolf In London". Notice that all those films are classics so if you're going to borrow from something, at least this one borrowed from the best, right? A group of army dudes on some training exercises in the Scottish woodlands run afoul of some severely pissed off and hungry lycanthropes on the prowl for a little white meat. As the wolves commence their attack, the group retreats to an isolated cottage (ala NOTLD) and the rest of the film is a showcase as wolf and man battle it out for survival. Once you get past the thick accents and odd British humor, this one is a pure pleasure to watch unravel. All the battle scenes between wolf and man are nicely edited, and the whole thing charges along at a very quick pace with no room for a breather. The filmmakers thankfully abandoned the notion of that CGI bullshit, and went back to the old animatronic basics for this one. The werewolves in this one are about 7ft tall and look mean as hell. Very nice job. Plenty of blood and guts (literally) are spilled, and the version I saw was on the damn sci-fi channel! Terrific fun and a perfect example of smart filmmaking done on a low budget. It's a damn shame this one did not get played in stateside theatres. Today's horror genre needs more shit like this; to that there is no doubt.
