Shogun Assassin (1981)

Simply incredible samurai-styled film that was ton's of fun to watch. Samurai man Lone Wolf is hot on the warpath after an attempted assassination on his life by the Ninja clan goes awry, resulting instead in the murder of his wife. Lone Wolf now walks the "trail of vengeance" accompanied by his five year old son, together dispatching Shogun and Ninja alike. Lone Wolf pushes his son around in a sort of makeshift baby cart, which is loaded with all sorts of nifty weapons, such as swords that pop out of the wheels, etc. This one is loaded with excellently styled fight scenes, resulting in many buckets o' blood being spilled. Not only is there much blood spilled, but spurted, as in geysers and geysers of the red stuff shooting up in the air, courtesy of Lone Wolf's vengeful sword. The violence is very explicit, yet cartoony, so the viewer is not turned off by all the throat slashings that happen every ten seconds. There is actually lot's of cool imagery in this film, most notably the scene of Lone Wolf standing against a backdrop of the sun as a freshly split in two skull spurts blood across the sky. Very nice. "Shogun Assassin" was, from what I have heard, a three part film series from Japan originally. Some American distributors got a hold of them, used footage from the first two, added a new (and catchy) synthesizer score, and some decent dubbing to give us yanks this fine film, of which I am eternally grateful. Must viewing if you ever have a chance to snag a copy.
