Faces of Death 2 (1981)

Director: Conan LeClaire

Well, here’s more “real death” footage narrated by the ever popular “Dr. Gross” described on the video box as being perfect for “When Make Believe Is Just Not Enough”! This sequel in the never-ending “Faces of Death” saga is, as I like to call it, the “boring one" focusing more on the aftermath of natural disasters and the like than the first films phony yet more interesting sequences of staged alligator and bear attacks. Basically the whole film seems to feature footage that was left on the first ones cutting room floor that was then edited together and sold as a “sequel”. This time around we’re treated to such niceties as a fatal boxing match, firing squads, stunts gone-awry, victims of avalanches and burned buildings, all the while narrated by good old Dr. Gross in his mock philosophical tone of voice.

Unlike the first film, the footage in this sequel actually seems genuine, as most could have easily been taken from various newsreels and the like. The only segment that seemed staged to me was the one with the PCP induced nut that gets gunned down by the local police. Most of the other footage is shown “after the fact”, most notably the victims of the various natural disasters shown in the film. To pad the films running time a bit you also get to witness the obligatory “animal slaughter” footage that is, personally speaking, the hardest stuff to watch in these types of films. While animal deaths have been showcased in the various “mondo” and Italian cannibal flicks of the seventies, this stuff really turns me off and serves no purpose other than to show how cruel and savage mankind truly is. If watching baby seals get clubbed to death is your idea of fun, I suggest you seek serious psychiatric care. Animal slaughter is used for nothing more than pure shock value in these films, though for me it depresses rather than shocks my psyche. All in all, “Faces of Death 2” is a rather boring film as far as these types of flicks are concerned. Could have greatly benefited from some phony bear/alligator attacks.
