Basket Case 3: The Progeny (1991)

Director: Frank Henenlotter

Third and final entry in the perennially zany “Basket Case” trilogy brings things to a nice and satisfying finish, and continues with the sick humor established in the second film. Reportedly shot back to back with part two, things pick up right after the last one ended. Granny Ruth has packed up the old bus with her family of freaks for a road trip to see Uncle Hal, a doctor and fellow “unique individual” sympathizer who will assist Belial’s girlfriend Eve in giving birth. Brother Duane is now completely crazy and confined to a straight jacket, and Belial is pissed for what happened at the end of part two, with Duane attempting to sew him back on via some yarn and a knitting needle. Eventually the police department gets involved by snatching Belial’s babies and, well, I suppose you can figure out the rest. Some highlights include the birth scene of the baby Belial’s (an even dozen of the little buggers), a mecha-Belial, dozens of freaks, Annie Ross as Granny Ruth (awesome performance) and a show stopping freak “musical” number of that old song “Personality”. There’s tons of gooey and rubbery f/x on display, and the humor is dead on. This one’s a nice close to a terrific little batch of films.
