When it comes to the realm of the Pumpkin Ale, I'll confess to a limited amount of knowledge/experience. I know I tried one years ago, as the brewer escapes memory, and absolutely hated it. Then again, my palette was not exactly refined in the sense of "beer tasting", a cold Coors was about as fancy as I got. So, with October winding down and the Season of Harvest upon us, I thought I would give ye old pumpkin ale another shot.
I really wanted to try a craft/micro style but the best I could do in my local grocery was Molson/Coors "Blue Moon" label, and their "Harvest Moon Ale".
I know, I know, it's a macro and maybe not the best representation of this style, but it was the best I could do at the time.
So, here we are. Lazy late fall evening? Check? Beer and glass ready to pour? Check. First sip.......hmmm. Second sip....hmmm. Verdict? Pretty fucking average. This thing has a decent head that dissipates quickly, and while the amber color is mildly pretty, the flavor is ZERO. I mean, I may as well have been drinking a damn Coors. Very watery and practically zero mouthfeel. There is a hint of some nutmeg/clover kinda taste but pumpkin? Where the hell is the pumpkin? This is a pumpkin ale, correct? I swear this beer really is a Coors with some various spices thrown in, and nothing more. Finished off three and while they are not undrinkable, this beer is very, very average and very, very overpriced. A bit of a disappointment.
Verdict: Very average beer/Not recommended
