Necronomicon (1993)

Director: Brian Yuzna, Shu Kaneko, Christophe Gans

Fun anthology loosely based on three H.P. Lovecraft short stories. Our first story "The Drowned", features a poor guy mourning over the recent death of his wife. He moves into his uncle's old mansion and finds out through an old tell-all letter written by his uncle describing how he to, once grieved the death of his wife and son, and how he was able to bring them back again through an ancient book, the "Necronomicon". Unfortunately, the letter stops before the deceased uncle can write of what happened once they did come back (it's not good), so the nephew is of course destined to make the same mistake. Nice gothic atmosphere and a cool tentacled monster are the highlights in this one. Second story "The Cold" tells the tale of an eccentric doctor who cheats death by injecting himself with spinal fluid and keeping his body at a chilly temperature. The scariest part in this segment was the brief (thank god) love scene between actor David Warner who is in his fifties at least, with a chick in her early twenties. I just got weird vibes for some reason from that scene. Once again decent f/x, especially one terrific body meltdown gag that was just awesome. Nicely done. Third and last is "Whispers", about a female cop who stumbles into an old building in search of her wounded partner. In the bowels of the building she stumbles across an ancient race of aliens that need our brains and bone marrow for survival. This one had the crappiest story but was the most f/x laden, plenty of body parts, marrow sucking aliens and more. For a movie that had so many different people working on it (three different directors, several different f/x teams) it came out pretty damn good. Decent stories and tons of juicy f/x courtesy of Optic Nerve, Screaming Mad George, and Steve Johnson make this one a good watch.
