Grim Prairie Tales (1990)

Very nice little "western" horror anthology which stars Brad Dourif and James Earl Jones as two travelers who are forced to camp together as the desert night closes in. Dourif, in a change from his usual psychotic roles, plays a mild mannered banker type who is crossing the great west to meet his wife. As night falls he is forced to set up camp, and is soon joined by an unexpected guest, a grizzled bounty hunter played by James Earl Jones. They proceed to tell each other horror stories to pass the night, with each man trying to top the other with the next tale. Now, the stories themselves are somewhat interesting, dare I say even a tad intellectual. These tales are not of the "zombie returns from the grave to get revenge" type that you would expect from Creepshow, etc. Some of these stories actually make you think a bit, and I know that may disappoint some of you. Besides the short tales, what really made this film enjoyable was the chemistry between Brad Dourif and James Earl Jones. I really enjoyed watching their characters trying to top each other with each passing tale. On a weird last note, if you have never seen a grown man sucked up into a woman's crotch before, you will after watching this one.
