The Evil That Men Do (1984)

Director: J. Lee Thompson

Charles "Fighting All The Evil That Men Do" Bronson is back (well, back as in 1984) this time as a retired professional killer named Holland who's brought out of retirement to avenge a friends death at the hands of a Joseph Mengele styled doctor offing dissidents in some seedy South American country. With the assistance (if you can call it that) of his dead friend's wife, the two are off to complete Holland's final "mission".

"What I really need is a shotgun with a sawed-off barrel, the shells to go with it, and a large-caliber handgun." - Holland (Charles Bronson)

As far as "action" films go it's really hard to put this one in that category because there just isn't much action. It's sorta talky and plenty dumb, as the majority of the film features Bronson going after the good doctor's henchmen before he gets to the main kill. Sorta reminded me of an old Nintendo game where you gotta fight the mini-bosses before you get to the "big boss". There is, however, just something appealing about a guy in his late fifties/early sixties who's just able to kick so much ass in a single sitting. And kick ass Bronson does aplenty, whether it's throwing a knife into some dude's throat, hanging a guy by a fire hose and throwing him over a high rise balcony, or just shooting someones head off with a sawed off shotgun, Bronson does it all folks. It's what happens in between the Bronson action scenes, which is absofuckinglutely nothing, that really ruins the movie.

Wait. Wait just a minute. That's not all that almost ruins the movie. What did I say in the intro about the dead friend's wife accompanying Bronson on his mission? This broad not only has the idiocy to go along with Bronson, she drags her 6 year old daughter along as well, all the while asking Bronson if she/they are in any danger?? Let's see, your husband died by torture, you're in a fascist hellhole of a backward country and you wonder if your precious little angel might be in danger? Jesus Christ are you dumb. Not only this, but she berates Bronson time after time for being a "cold-hearted killer". Aaaargh.

Crappy sidekicks aside, this really is a bad film. But, it does have Charles Bronson essentially repeating his role in "Death Wish" and that's what we all really came to see, isn't it? This one's bad, but in an appreciating way. If you crack a few brews, come into it expecting absolutely nothing, there is some fun to bad in a bad film kinda way.
